1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
I have always struggled with drawing hands and feet. I believe that it has to do with the amount of bones, tendons and joints in one area. There has to be attention to detail and understanding of what one is drawing. I have never been too keen on drawing this as a subject matter, but I have been trying to enhance my skills. I have taken some figure drawing classes so this has helped me tremendously. Although I am not as well versed with hands as a subject matter as I would like. Especially referring to artists such as Leonardo and Michelangelo, they were well versed with their abilities in drawing anatomy.
2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I choose this media because i work best in pencil. I find charcoal to be very messy and hard to keep my edges clean. When i draw I like to keep my lines defined and not hazing, which is inevitable with charcoal. It moves across the paper without any help. I am a little more experienced in pencil than I am charcoal, I have tried to get better at charcoal but the material itself is difficult. When I have the choice I automatically go for pencil because it provides a better handling of the values.
3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
Creating with my non-dominant hand was and always will be a very difficult task. My less dominant hand really struggled with this exercise, I thought it was really interesting and challenging though. It was very uncomfortable due to the acknowledgment I had because of the little control in my left hand. My left hand has not been trained like my right s there was definitely a clear distinction between the two.
4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
I think that this was successful in the sense of good practice. I did these to the best of my ability and honestly I am not used to drawing with my left hand. I believe this is a good exercise to do no matter what when you are involved with the arts. Like mentioned before, the hands and feet are two subjects that are very difficult to replicate and master. Personally, I do not target these as subject matter so that was a good reminder to do so and to practice more on my own.
5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
If the drawing or painting was based on expression or I was trying to get a new style in a work of art I would perhaps take this approach. I think that it would give my work another layer that it doesn't already have. If I was working on a piece that wasn't meant to be realistic or control, I would try this technique. I think that with the use of color would be interesting if there is a sporadic unplanned feeling to the painting. Another aspect that I think would work with this technique would be if I were focusing upon emotion.
